Returning Soldiers' Cross
A Walk Through History
Starting from the center of the village of Krimml, this walk takes you into Krimml’s recent past, leading to the Returning Soldiers' Cross.
The cross commemorates the soldiers who returned home from the First and Second World Wars. After often spending years in captivity, many returned with physical injuries and psychological trauma to a homeland that had changed during their absence. Alongside the challenges of reconstruction, they had to find their place in a new life.
Directions
From the center of Krimml, the path leads north to the edge of the forest. At the end of the paved road, a narrow trail begins, winding its way up through the woods via several switchbacks to the "Heimkehrerkreuz" (Returning Soldiers' Cross). From there, a sweeping panoramic view opens up, taking in Krimml, the Krimml Waterfalls, Hohe Tauern National Park, and Plattenkogel.
From the cross, the idyllic walking path continues to the Panoramahotel Burgeck. In summer, young cattle belonging to local farmers graze beside the path. From the Panoramahotel Burgeck, the route leads downhill along the road, returning to the village center.
Walking time: approx. 1.25 hours.
