Pioneers in the opening of the Krimmler Wasserfälle

Krimml Wasserfalldorf knows about the importance of those pacemakers who wanted to make the beauty of the Krimmler Wasserfälle accessible to everyone. Wise foresight and courage, as well as heart and mind, were needed to master the economic challenges and the immense hardships of construction.

The most beautiful vantage points, pulpits and bridges are still reminiscent of these deserving men with their names:

Ignaz von Kürsinger

k.k. district comissionar from Mittersill 1835 - 1842

induced around 1835, due to the increasing national and international interest in the Krimmler Wasserfälle, to build a staircase on the orographic left bank of the Krimmler Ache up to the beginning of the lowest drop. This path led to an open pavilion (Gloriette), a painter's cottage and a viewing platform. Kürsinger's facilities fell into disrepair over the decades. The memory of the pioneering work of the "Oberpinzgauer Landesvater" lives on in Kürsingerplatz at the foot of the Unterer Krimmler Wasserfall.

Rudolf Riemann

1. Chairman of the Pinzgau section of the DuOEAV 1872 – 1880

was the driving force behind the creation of the first waterfall path, which led from the valley basin over the three waterfall levels to the entrance to the Krimmler Achental. The path, built in 1878/79, was not based on the orographically right, centuries-old Tauernweg, but opened up the waterfalls on the orographically left, better visible side. Fixed railings, vantage points and pulpits led the visitors in serpentines up close to the natural spectacle. The Riemannkanzel commemorates the active honorary chairman of the Pinzgau section, who was born in Posen (Prussia) and whose whole love was for the Pinzgau mountains.

Theodor Ritter von Sendtner

President of the DuOEAV 1877 – 1879, founding member of the DAV Munich section

As the president, he campaigned before the General Assembly of the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs with his own special powers of persuasion to support the construction of a path at the Krimmler Wasserfälle in 1878/79. It is thanks to the commitment of the Munich bank manager that the planned project could be financed with funds from the Alpine Club and put into practice. With the Sendtner pulpit named after him, the meritorious work of the respected club official of the German and Austrian Alpine Club is honored up to the present.

Ernst Jung

Founding member and member of the board of the Rheinland section 1876 – 1893

Along with Rudolf Riemann and Albert Schett, he was a participant in the three-man Alpine Club expedition that climbed the pathless, exposed terrain from the top waterfall to the valley basin in 1876 in order to explore a practicable route on the left bank for the opening of the Krimmler Wasserfälle. The cottage and mine owner from Kirchen an der Sieg contributed his knowledge to the implementation plans and, as the voice of the Rheinland section, pleaded for financial support for the project at the general meetings of the German and Austrian Alpine Clubs. The Jung-Kanzel commemorates the deserving pioneer of the Alpine Club, who worked as an external functionary for the Pinzgau section's path construction initiative.

Friedrich Ernst Berger

1st Chairman of the Warnsdorf Section 1887 – 1943, pioneer of the establishment of the Warnsdorf Section at the end of the 19th century

the Alpenvereinsweg along the Krimmler Wasserfälle, built in 1878/79, was in such a bad condition that it was in danger of being closed due to a lack of safety. After the German and Austrian Alpine Association had passed the responsibility for the waterfall path on to the Warnsdorf section in 1899, this section began in 1900 under its active first chairman Ernst Friedrich Berger with the construction of a 4 km long path that could be driven on with a chair car and had numerous viewing platforms, bridges and squares, which was ceremoniously opened in 1901. The "Bergerblick" vantage point bears witness to the tireless zest for action of the Zittau yarn wholesaler, who realized the major goals of the Warnsdorf section in the Krimml mountains.

Albert Schett

k.k. Postmaster and landlord in Neukirchen a. Grv., tourism pioneer from Oberpinzgau

Alongside Rudolf Riemann and Ernst Jung, he was a participant in the three-strong Alpine Club expedition that explored the sloping, rocky terrain on the left bank of the Krimmler Wasserfälle in 1876 and decided to lead the waterfall path on this side. As a prudent construction manager, the postmaster and innkeeper from Neukirchen planned the facility and supervised the construction work until completion. The Schett Bridge is named in his honor, a viewing platform where there used to be a bridge that connected the Wasserfallweg with the historic Tauernweg.
